A friend just asked me “Are there are any good low calorie oil substitutes for baking, besides applesauce?”. I thought it was such a good question that I’d share the question and my response with you, in case you’re interested. Please feel free to comment on any post and ask any questions or give input. Yes, there are SO many different replacements that you can use instead of oil!
1 Tablespoon flaxseed meal + 3 tablespoons water can be used per 1/4 cup oil or per egg.
Pureed fruits (like prunes, peaches and pears)
Mashed bananas
Pureed veggies (like sweet potatoes or squash) can also be used as a fat replacer in baking.
NOTE: You will probably need about 3/4 as much puree as oil.
When cooking, instead of sauteeing in oil, try using about 1/4 cup water or vegetable stock. This will cut down on the fat and calorie content of your meal and make your pots and pans a lot easier to clean. If the pan dries out too much during the cooking process, just add a little more liquid. Hope that helps.
